To be, or not to be, that is the question:

사느냐  죽느냐 그것이 문제로다.

 

Whether ‘tis nobler in the mind to suffer

The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,

말도 안 되는 운명의 돌팔매 질과 화살을 참는 것이 고결할 것인가

 

Or to take arms against a sea of troubles

And by opposing end the,. To die – to sleep,

혹은 고통의 바다에 대해 무기를 들어 그것을 끝내는 것이 옳은 것인가.

죽는다는 것은 잠자는 것이다

 

No more; and by a sleep to say we end

The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks

That flesh is heir to: ‘tis a consummation

그것 이상이 아니다. 잠에 의해서 수많은 마음의 고통과 육신을 가지면 그것의 후계자가 될 수밖에 없는 수천의 자연스러운 shock를 끝내는 것이다. 이런 것은 경건하게 바라는 성취의 극치이다.

 

Devoutly to be wish’d. To die, to sleep;

죽는 것은 잠자는 것이다

 

To sleep, perchance to dream-ay, there’s the rub:

잠자면 아마 꿈을 꾸게 될 것이다. 아..악몽을 꿀 수도 있어서 걸린다.

 

For in that sleep of death what dreams may come,

왜냐하면 죽음의 꿈속에서 어떠한 꿈이 올지 모른다.

 

When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,

우리가 이 생의 굴레를 없애버렸을 때

 

Must give us pause- there’s the respect

That makes calamity of so long life.

우리를 중지하게 한다 – (죽음 다음에 무엇이 올지 모르기 때문에) 그 것이 긴 삶이라는 재앙을 만드는 면이다.

 

For who would bear the whips and scorns of time,

The’oppressor’s wrong, the proud man’s contumely,

The pangs of dispriz’d love, the law’s delay.

The insolence of office, and the spurns

That patient merit of th’unworthy takes,

왜냐하면 이 시대의 채찍과 경멸, 탄압하는 사람의 잘못, 거만한 사람의 오만

거절당한 사람의 고통, 법의 미룸, 관리의 거만함, 신분이 높지 않은 사람들이 받아 들어야만 하는 참고 인내하는 장점이 받아들여야만 하는 모독을 견디기 때문이다.

 

When he himself might his quietus make

With a bare bodkin? Who would fardels bear,

그 자신이 그의 끝을 작은 칼로 만들 수 있을 때 누가 이것을 참겠느냐? < 마음만 먹으면 자신의 삶을 끊을 수 있는데 누가 위의 것들을 참겠느냐> 누가 무거운 짐을 지겠느냐

 

To grunt and sweat under a weary life,

이 지겨운 삶 속에서 투덜대고 땀을 흘리겠느냐

 

But(unless) that the dread of something after death,

The undiscover’d country, from whose bourn

No traveler returns, puzzles the will,

죽음 뒤에 올 어떤 것에 대한 두려움이, 우리가 모르는 삶, 그것의 경계로부터, 어떠한 여행자도 돌아오지 않는, 죽겠다는 의지를 곤혹스럽게 하지 않는다면 누가 죽음을 택하지 않겠느냐

 

And makes us rather bear those ills we have

Than fly to others that we know not of?

그리고 알지 못하는 다른 것에 날아가기 보다는 우리가 현재 알고 있는 그런 잘못들을 견디게 한다.

<죽음 뒤에 뭐가 있는지 몰라 지금을 견딤>

 

Thus conscience does make cowards of us all,

And thus the native hue of resolution

Is sicklied o’er with the pale cast of thought,

이것저것 재보는 것이 우리를 모두 겁쟁이로 만드는 구나. 죽겠다는 결심의 원래의 안색이 생각의 창백한 그림자로 병약하게(연약해져 버린다) 변한다.

 

And enterprises of great pitch and moment

매우 중요한 과업이

 

With this regard their currents turn awry

이런 저런 것을 다 생각해 보면서는 그들의 흐르는 방향이 일그러져 버린다.

 

And lose the name of action. Soft you now,

그리고 행동이라는 이름을 일어버리게 된다. 좀 참자.
